Now that is, the water looks clear but if you taste it, it tastes terrible, tastes like rust or has a bad taste from the manganese, but the water looks clear. It is better to use manganese dioxide because the manganese dioxide is a catalyst. Several different types of manganese dioxide coated filter media are used. Some are as high as 10% There’s one that can even go up to 18% which is very high for the coated media. So what happens is that most of the manganese is used for various industrial processes, like steel and batteries. You can usually see it in the flush tank of your toilet where you’ll see it growing out from the sides or maybe the water will be bubbly with clumps of slimy gelatinous material floating in your flush tank. But usually it’s clear water. Traditionally, and is still used quite a bit, is that you can use just plain sand and anthracite. So when there is a tiny bit of dissolved oxygen in the water, and the iron and manganese in the water come in contact with the manganese dioxide, you get that catalytic reaction and the iron and manganese is filtered out of the water. It’s more of an oxidizer. 8, 10, 12 gallons a minute is pretty common. They usually needs some kind of oxidation or they need  water that already has a lot of dissolved oxygen. So this solid manganese dioxide media is interesting. There are different strengths and there’s different qualities. You can have a lower pH, it won’t hurt the media. When needed, you only need to replace it partially using no chemical additives. So better to remove it and fortunately it’s cheap and easy to do, so most folks do that. In this series, I’ve been giving useful easy-to-follow tips and information all about well water, well water treatment systems, and h… You can also inject potassium permanganate into the pipe before the greensand filter and you can do it this as well with the manganese dioxide filters. We’re in California, for some reason we can’t sell it here because of the proposition where there’s a warning against. Perhaps if you get into the borehole wells in Africa or somewhere else where there’s shallow wells, and there’s a lot of oxidation going on anyway, then you just use a standalone filter system. But anyway, a lot of people have used it for many years actually and it works good if you have just a small amount of iron and you have the right conditions for it. So Birm and maybe a couple of others, they’re very low, like 1%. Below 7 is considered acidic. I’m going to talk about hydrogen peroxide in its own dedicated episode coming up. It doesn’t fail quick. Mostly, a very common way for homes is to use either aeration or chlorination. We’re going to talk about under what conditions manganese media work the best and the importance of water chemistry and flowrate. The MnO2 based medias are of two kinds: -Manganese Dioxide coated media with a support base- Birm, Greensand Plus, Katalox light etc. MnO2is a granular or sand type of filter media whose application is quite common in a number of manufacturing processes, specially water treatment.It is used in softening well water by eliminate iron, manganese and Sulphur impurities from it. So in our experience, if you have manganese, it’s better if you chlorinate it first or ozonate it. And so that’s a sign of a high quality media, it’s all very uniform in size. But basically you’ve got a mineral that will add a tiny bit of calcium into the water and alkalinity and then neutralize the pH so your iron media will work. It's lighter than Filox, and requires significantly less backwash. there’s no chemicals in it. And last but not least is the flowrate. Many folks all over the world have problems in their well. There are a few types of media in which the primary ingredient is manganese dioxide. And by chlorination or aeration or ozonation, I mean an automatic or continuous system that injects a tiny bit of chlorine before the filter system. I talked about that a bit but the flowrate is just how many gallons in one minute your well pump can pump. It’s not extremely common but it’s common in some areas of the country, and if you did use a strong oxidizer such as chlorine in a contact tank and then you have another filter tank with activated carbon, then low levels of tannin are not a problem. Filter column experiments employed both new anthracite coal and sand as well as oxide‐coated media obtained from three full‐scale water treatment facilities. The solid type just means is that it is an ore that they have mined, so it’s a natural material, and they’ve carefully grated it into a fine particle. The iron is largely dissolved in the water so you need some way to oxidize it. So theadvantage is it’s natural, and. The idea is that you just want to increase the potential of the water for oxidation so when it hits the manganese dioxide media, a catalytic reaction takes place right in the media and boom, you get all these great formation of iron floc happening right in the media. And one way to figure that out is if you can measure the ORP. A naturally mined ore, Pyrolox is a mineral form of manganese dioxide which has been used in water treatment for more than 75 years. And then there’s a couple different types of substrate or inner core that they coat with manganese dioxide. But you can’t just get a standalone sand filter just like you can’t use a standalone cartridge filter and expect it to remove all the iron and rust that’s in the well water. But generally it’s more of an aesthetic issue. And the solid manganese dioxide filters they can use intermittent or continuous regeneration as well, generally continuous regeneration works best where you’re injecting chlorine ahead of it. Pyrolox is a granular filtration media for hydrogen sulfide, iron and manganese reduction. But basically it measures millivolts and there’s different kinds of laboratory types and other ones. And so this stuff works really well and like I said that there’s different brands you can look for. The manganese dioxide coated surface of GreensandPlus acts as a catalyst in the oxidation reduction reaction of iron and manganese. What is manganese dioxide filter media and how is it used? There are considerable di˚erences in the Soluble and total manganese removals were evaluated as a function of parameters such as pH, presence or absence of an oxidant in the filter‐applied water, quantity and oxidation state of the filter media surface oxide coating, and temperature. It’s now a problem in the US and Canada but we see a lot of iron and manganese problems in Mexico and South America.  We’ve even seen some folks in Europe have this problem and know there are different parts of Europe that have a problem with it, and in Middle East, Asia of course. It’s counter-intuitive because we have peroxide and sometimes you put it on your skin to clean a cut or whatever so you think , “Oh it’s going to kill bacteria”. If you’re listening to this, you already know this but iron is a serious problem. It has a little slower reaction time than iron and a higher pH is required. It’s cheaper, it’s light, but has a very, very thin coating of this manganese dioxide on it and it’s a bit unstable, you can’t use chlorine with it. Specifically, manganese dioxide media which is the probably the most common type of filter media used for iron and manganese removal. So that’s the big difference in it. Fortunately, the blends work good because the manganese dioxide media is much heavier so it sits on the bottom and then your calcite is on top.
